Discipline Plan

EZELL-HARDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DISCIPLINE PLAN
Handbook States…
School Wide Discipline Policy
An effective school climate is one that is nurturing, safe, and conducive to learning. In establishing a discipline policy, it is important to focus on encouraging students to make good choices and in being responsible for their behavior. In making these decisions, students learn that there are rewards and consequences for their actions. Our job as educators and parents is to guide students to rewards for appropriate choices and to assist them in learning from their mistakes. It is hoped that this consistency provided by the school-wide plan will assist students in realizing their potential, thereby making the learning environment as productive as possible.
Ezell-Harding uses a school wide discipline plan and establishes expectations to enable students to achieve social and academic success in school. Such supports and expectations are developed, implemented, and monitored by all staff members working in the school.

Student Conduct
Behavior of students is a direct reflection on their family and their school. In addition to behavior, their physical and emotional safety is a very important issue. We believe that school should be a safe, affirming place where all students feel secure. Students are expected to show respect for teachers, staff, and their own peers.

The reputation of Ezell-Harding Christian School is directly related to the behavior of students both on and off campus. Actions on or off campus that adversely reflect on the good name of Ezell-Harding Christian School will lead to disciplinary action.

DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY
(Here in the Elementary...)
We believe all students deserve a safe environment where they can enhance their self-esteem, discover the joy of learning, and take important steps toward learning responsible decision-making.  Our goal in effective discipline is to help students learn to make appropriate choices through personal accountability and guided problem solving.

As educators, we share the responsibility with parents to promote character building and service to our community.

Student Responsibilities:

·         Read the Discipline Plan with your parents.
·         Follow the school rules and behavior guidelines consistently.
·         Use good decision-making and problem-solving skills.
·         Accept consequences rather than make excuses.

Parent Responsibilities:

·         Read and discuss the school rules and behavior guidelines with your child.
·         Help your child take responsibility for his/her actions and avoid making excuses.
·         Work with the school to support your child’s development in decision making, problem solving, and social skills.

**What happens when my child is sent to the Principal’s Office?**

*Every classroom teacher will have a set of classroom rules and consequences for breaking those rules, as well as positive reinforcement that is used (see below).

*Repeated breaking of or any disruptive behavior deemed more severe will lead to an automatic visit to the principal’s office.

When this happens, the following will occur:

1.) The principal will decide if the student will receive a Red, Green, or Yellow slip. You will always be contacted in some form (e-mail or phone call) if your child is sent to the office.

a.)  Green slip = a first time offense/warning

b.) Yellow slip = 3 strikes (meaning 3 more times in the office will result in next day suspension unless the action is deemed more severe and a red slip is automatically given)

c.)  Red slip = next-day suspension (can be given at any time regardless if they have had a green or yellow slip- always depends on the severity of each action)

2.)All slips will be sent home and signed. Parent, Teacher, and Principal will have a copy on file.

3.)  Any time a child is sent to the principal’s office, a conference or a phone call may be needed.

4.)  After 2 Red Slips, there will be a conference and a final warning, meaning that the next Red Slip is grounds for expulsion.

**Parents, please know that we never want to expel or dismiss any students from our school. We feel that this policy does allow for mistakes and opportunities to improve behavior. However, as mentioned above, we believe all students deserve a safe environment where they can enhance their self-esteem, discover the joy of learning, and take important steps toward learning responsible decision making. Please help us encourage your children on the path to success!**

POSITIVE RECOGNITION

We believe students should be recognized for their academic achievements and their responsible citizenship.  Student success is celebrated in all classrooms at Ezell-Harding.  This may appear in the form of Student-of-the-Week celebrations, letters of recognition, bulletin board displays of good work, classroom prizes earned for meeting goals, or announcements in class newsletters. Teacher will have the freedom to use positive reinforcement in their classroom in the way they deem appropriate. School-wide recognition is also given throughout the year. This year it will be in the form of Terrific Tickets and "Caught Ya" being good buttons!
