Vocabulary Parade Information

October Vocabulary Costume Parade!

Ezell-Harding will be staging our first ever Vocabulary Parade on October 26, 2012! The idea for the Vocabulary Parade stems from the children’s book Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster.

For costume ideas you can check out the author’s website: http://debrafrasier.com

Costumes:
Costumes can be made from hats, poster board with straps, sandwich boards (front and back poster board) recycled Halloween costumes, T-shirts, or other props. Just remember that all items should be “safe” items! Also, practice putting on and taking off your costume so you can do it all be yourself (or with a tiny bit of help from your teacher).

Your costume may be any creative interpretation of the word (literal or silly).

Include your vocabulary word and definition on the costume somewhere. Also, Remember to make a large card with your word on it, so we know which vocabulary word you represent. You can carry it, make it into a headband, or have it as a part of your costume. Be CREATIVE!

Choosing Your Word:
You may choose your own vocabulary word. Choose words that are age-appropriate, but also expand the students’ vocabulary. For example, a kindergartener would be impressed to learn that “pachyderm” is a synonym for “elephant.”
Compound words lend themselves to creativity: catfish, rainbow, butterfly, mailbox, houseplant…
“Sound alike” words are another great source of fun, creative ideas! (Especially for younger children):

Homonyms – Spelled the Same
Example: bed – to sleep in; flower bed
pen, checks, glasses, wave, bark, box, ear, watch, ring, bill, scale, bowl, bank, fork, file, palm, bow, stamp, bat, row, nails, note, bulb, trunk, pitcher

Homophones – Spelled Differently
Example: bare/bear – The bear with no fur is bare!
beet/beat, pair/pear, tow/toe, mail/male, rein/reign, waste/waist, tail/tale, son/sun, tea/golf tee, flower/flour, fur/fir tree, road/rode, sew/sow seed, steak/stake, cent/scent, knight/night, hare/hair, rows/rose, see/sea, meat/meet, ring/wring

*Nouns (person, place or thing) would be great starting places for kindergarteners!

*Adjectives – dress in clothing that illustrates your word (shimmery, glistening, …)
